In 2011 Janis Merand continued in her role as high school coordinator and worked with eMzantsi staffers Earl Mentor, Khanyiselo Silo and Luke de Villiers to recruit Grade 8-10 learners in Ocean View High, Masiphumelele High and Fish Hoek High respectively. Following promotional assemblies at high schools in May, they designed a 2 day winter holiday programme called Jumpstart which featured workshops in dance, drama and recycled craft, as well as creative games facilitating intercultural interaction, with a focus on the high school theme for ‘eMzantsi Goes BOS’ – Energy.
This took place on July 4-5th at the brand new Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation Youth Centre opposite Masiphumelele High School. eMzantsi is piloting a mutually beneficial partnership with the Youth Centre as it offers a range of excellent health and counselling facilities at its clinic and needs more young people from local communities across the peninsula to be made aware of them.

Jumpstart July 4-5 2011 winter holiday programme
Following the inaugural winter holiday Jumpstart programme for high school participants in July, the high school facilitation team held follow up sessions monthly from Aug-Nov on Fridays involving drama, dance, carnival percussion, a climate change movie, costume-making and poetry facilitated by various contributors.
In September, Jumpstart participants from Masiphumelele, Ocean View and Fish Hoek High schools performed together at an assembly at Fish Hoek High School to demonstrate their ‘eMzantsi Goes BOS’ learnings and team spirit to their peers.

They did very well to communicate their message in challenging circumstances – the power cut just beforehand was ironic given that their giant puppet is energy champion Solar!
At the two day spring holiday workshop in October, high school participants visited Solar at his place of creation in Ocean View for inspiration to help design their individual constumes. They also began dance classes to start learning moves for the carnival parade.
