In 2009, Lottery funding allowed for one month’s intensive training in recycled art design and construction for a crew recruited from previous carnivals’ volunteers from Ocean View, Masiphumelele and Fish Hoek. During this period in the workshop at the Living Way Training Campus, they built the ‘Big 5’ floats as well as preparing and finishing 250 hats for the primary school kids. They also facilitated four public costume-making workshops on Saturdays throughout November.

Mural
In 2009, with full support from local councillors, Zimbabwean artist Kuda Gavi painted a mural on a wall opposite the site of the post-Carnival stage show in Sun Valley. Ou Kaapse Weg is the gateway to the south peninsula and the mural is the first thing to greet people as they drive over the mountain into the valley. Representations of cheerful south peninsulans, old and young, coloured, black and white, united in celebration of life ‘eMzantsi’ welcome visitors alongside our better-known landscapes and wildlife.
