Primary schools 2010

In 2010, 4 twinned groups of more than 200 Grade 4-6 learners worked together in weekly workshops through terms 3 and 4. The 2010 programme was designed to be more integrated, with service providers Jungle Theatre (drama), Red Zebra (percussion) and Junkanew (recycled costume-making) working together in all sessions. This more dynamic team presentation enabled a more seamless implementation than last year.

We had 4 groups this year, instead of 5, as schools coordinator Pat Franke was training for her Level 4 teaching certificate every Tuesday. The teachers’ strike in August presented a great challenge this term as several schools missed workshops, but extra sessions were scheduled where possible to help learners catch up.

Group 1: Kommetjie Primary and Ukhanyo Primary: Silver Stars
Group 2: Imhoff Waldorf and Marine Primary: Golden Suns
Group 3: Kleinberg Primary and the LSEN School: Ruby Hearts
Group 4: Simonstown School and Ukhanyo Primary: Little Fish
(Ukhanyo have two groups as they have 60 in one class.)

Week 1 started with a puppet show of the 'Step Up, Take Heart, Give Love' story.
Week 2 followed with introductions and games to get to know each other.

After 12 weeks working together, each twinned group then joined with another twinned group to practice carnival parading with their instruments.

Week 13 joint rehearsals: Kommetjie, Ukhanyo A and B and Simonstown School outside the eMzantsi office at the Sunnyacres Centre.

Marine, Imhoff, Kleinberg and LSEN gathered at the Civic Centre in Ocean View.

Week 14 after a break to accommodate exams the two combined groups reconvened for one last rehearsal the week before the Carnival.
In these final stages, choreographer Teva Scarborough came in to refine moves to harmonise the schools with the rest of the parade participant groups.
