eMzantsi Carnival Chills Out for 2012

This year’s eMzantsi Carnival will be a bit different. The parade will not take place along the Kommetjie Road because of the overburdened traffic situation in the south peninsula as a result of roadworks along Main Rd, False Bay. “Last year the Carnival theme was ‘eMzantsi Goes BOS’ and Bos it most certainly was with that crazy gale force southeaster” said Operations Manager Cindy Willcock. “This year our theme is ‘Family Tree’, so we’ve decided to take it easy and stay home!”

Thanks to the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, the eMzantsi Carnival Chillout will take place on Saturday 1st Dec from 10am-3pm outside the eMzantsi office on the more sheltered green at the Sunnyacres Shopping Centre. The green is by Foodzone, opposite Living Hope, on the corner of Lekkerwater and Kommetjie Road, between Capri and Masiphumelele, with ample parking.

The intercultural celebration of eMzantsi community-building activities this year will feature a mini-carnival parade around the perimeter of the park from 10am, including learners from the eMzantsi primary schools twinning programme, the eMzantsi Bloco carnival band and a giant Harlequin puppet made from recycled materials by the UNESCO mapiko apprentices. Mapiko Manager Yandiswa Mazwana added “We will also be offering free mask-making workshops for children who would like to make their own carnival costumes from colourful recycled materials.”

Jungle Theatre will perform their show ‘Metamorphosis’ at 11am and the eMzantsi Talent agency will showcase a wide range of music and dance acts from 12-3pm. Headlining the event will be the collaboration between reggae stars Paradox, rappers Luke D from Fish Hoek and MasiMassive’s Da O, plus Melting Pot regulars Ocean’s Riff from Ocean View with their unique brand of sokkiesokkie-soul and ghoema-jazz.

The eMzantsi Chillout will be Managing Director Sam Pearce’s 8th and last Carnival before she embarks on a 2 year trip around ‘Africa Clockwise’ with her husband comedian Mark Sampson and family. Their Big Green Truck that runs on cooking oil will also be on display so come check out their solar gadgets and wish them bon voyage.

There will be food and craft stalls, so come do some Christmas shopping or bring a picnic blanket and shade and just relax. Kom lam saam eMzantsi and share a wonderful family day out! Call the eMzantsi office 021 785 1515 for more informationor find us on Facebook.
