Intercultural Music Project
Intercultural Music Project
Since 2005, eMzantsi has provided a platform for local youth to display their artistic talent once a year at the annual Carnival in December. But since mid-2009, thanks to the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, the intercultural music project has expanded to offer year-round opportunities for local youth to improve their musical capabilities and get onstage as often as possible, while getting to know each other across communities.
More than 120 youth from Ocean View, Fish Hoek and Masiphumelele are involved in eMzantsi’s intercultural music project. Workshops are held twice a week in each area and are facilitated by local musicians dedicated to developing artists to a professional level.
Ocean View coordinator Earl Mentor is a performing artist in his own right, with 3 albums already to his name – find him on Facebook. Masiphumelele coordinator Khanyiselo Silo started as a gumboot dancing teacher, and Fish Hoek coordinator Luke De Villiers is a rap and graffiti artist, skateboarder and stand-up comedian.
