eMzantsi Talent: Marhoshi

Marhoshi means ‘the Kings’ in Tswana. This dynamic group was formed in 1999, by two brothers and three of their friends who were asked to put something together for a school talent show. Marhoshi was the first group to introduce gumboot dance to Masiphumelelele, and currently has up to 18 members who are busy passing this skill down to the youth who are interested in keeping the tradition alive.

Gumboot dance was invented by mine workers and consists of songs and praises accompanied by rhythms created by clapping, and the stamping and slapping of boots. The innovative youth of Marhoshi have taken it to a new level by introducing high energy, jazz rhythms and an interactive comedy feel that give this traditional artform a fresh twist. If you liked ‘Stomp’, you’ll love Marhoshi.
